BSD, or the Berkeley Software Distrubution, originated at the University of California at Berkeley in the 1970's. It is a derivative of AT&T Unix, which was introduced at UCB when Ken Thompson, one of the originators of Unix, spent a year's sabbatical at UCB (his alma mater). One of the main motivators and authors of BSD was Bill Joy, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems, and BSD can be considered to be an ancestor of Solaris as well as of Mac OS X.

BSD has become the base of many operating systems, including several 'free' systems. The first 'open source' version of BSD was 386BSD, which fathered NetBSD and FreeBSD. In 1995 NetBSD forked, spawning OpenBSD. PC-BSD is based on FreeBSD.

Compared with the Linux kernel, which is licensed under the GNU GPL, BSD has its own licence which is much more permissive than the GPL : it allows you to incorporate BSD code in proprietary products. Whilst BSD may be considered a development of Unix, and Linux a clone of Unix, a complete GNU/Linux distribution incorporates much BSD-descended software.

In general, BSD derivatives are considered to be secure, and features of those the Emporium sell include:
